When people decide to detox it’s usually for one of 2 reasons;
1. The Guilt Detox
You want to detox because your normal lifestyle is (eek) pretty bad, or because you’ve just had the worst weekend ever! Many a Sunday afternoon I use to find myself surrounded with empty crisp packets and ice-cream tubs thinking ‘I am so going on a detox tomorrow!’.
Maybe your vice is alcohol, or chips, or pizza – it doesn’t matter. It’s when you put stuff in our body that she doesn’t like, and then she gives up a kick up the backside to make some changes pronto.
Roll on the guilty Monday morning detox.. but it only ever lasts til Thursday right? And then we’re right back where we started, looking into an empty chocolate packet.
2. The Running out of Time Detox
It’s 7 days before your holiday/ party/ high school reunion; you’ve known about it for months and have been meaning to getting around to eating better…
But suddenly it’s only a week before the big day!
Shock horror.. You feel like a whale, your skins bad, you’ve got dark circles under your eyes; and you’re thinking drastic times call for drastic measures.
This is the I-fear-I’m-not-good-enough-quick-fix-detox and it’s probably the most common. I’ve done about 100 detoxes in my lifetime and about 75% of them fell into this category.
Detoxing based on fear sucks big time, and because we’re not in the right head space we’re bound to fail..
The fear detox cycle works like this;
> I’m not good enough
> decide to do radical unsustainable detox
> under eat
> body goes into shock and I end up feeling like crap
> I overeat the wrong foods because I feel starved
> body holds onto said foods
> I go to big event feeling more bloated and unhappy than before

Recognise this cycle? If you don’t then you’re one of the lucky ones!
Choosing to detox from a place of – No. 1 guilt, or No. 2 fear, are big no nos.
Firstly, they’re almost always way too strict and unsustainable which just damages your body in the long run.
Secondly, as soon as you hit the hunger wall or healing crisis your brain will drop the guilt/ fear motivation and do everything it can to weasel it’s way out of the detox. The amount of times I started a detox only to have my brain take over on day 4 are too many to count!
Thirdly, negative emotions are never a good reason to do anything full stop. If you find yourself being driven by negative emotions the best thing you can do is just let them go. Life is way too short and precious to be doing anything other than for the love and joy it brings you.
Say no to detoxing from fear or guilt!

So, those are the 2 biggest reasons not to detox. What about reasons to detox?
There are lots of these, but they all lead back to the same place and that is..
3. The Self Love Detox
Loving yourself enough to treat yourself propely, showing reverence for your body, giving it a break from the stress of the world. This is the true key to detoxing, and anyone or anything that tries to play on your fears or make you detox out of guilt – I say stink off!
I choose to detox because I care about myself and want to give my body some love!
